ISO 11897 is a test method for determining the tear propagation and tear resistance at the edge fold of bags made from thermoplastic flexible films.
The sample is cut into a trapezoidal shape with the edge fold located in the center. A 25 mm slit is then made along the edge fold. The sample is pulled
apart at a constant displacement rate until it breaks. When the tear passes through the entire edge fold of the sample, the force and displacement are
recorded and used to calculate the material's resistance to tear propagation.
The challenges of testing to this standard are:
Sample clamping
Calculations per standard report
liixan's solution:
Sample clamping - To mitigate the effects of the clamps on the sample, it is generally recommended that a rubber coated surface be used with side-acting manual or pneumatic clamps.
Calculations per standard report - lixian's Universal Testing Software allows the user to enter sample details, set the required test controls, automatically calculate
the required results and statistics, and generate a test report per the standard.
Be sure to review ISO 11897:1999 to fully understand the test setup, procedure, and results requirements.
